Ageing neck and décolletage.   What can I do?

We’ve all heard the term ‘turkey neck’ or ‘crepey neck’. When we think of adopting good skincare regimes, the face is always the main focus of attention and the neck and décolletage usually get ignored and forgotten about. This is a decision most end up regretting over the age of 30-40 years. The skin in these areas is thinner, but exposed to the same elements and wear and tear.

Over time, skin loses collagen and elastin. After the mid to late 20’s, collagen production slows and continues to decrease dramatically after age 30. From there, a person produces about 1-2% less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin loses its plumpness, firmness, tightness and becomes thinner as we age.  

So other than standing in front of a mirror gurning, lifting your chin, extending your neck and looking like a gulping fish…. this won’t work by the way…it will help to tone muscles, but won’t eliminate excess or loose skin) or hiding away under a scarf all year, what can be done to slow down the physical signs of ageing and promote a younger looking neck and décolletage without turning to invasive surgery?

1. Hydrate!

Drinking water is such a simple, inexpensive remedy for helping to treat so many skin concerns, yet its not always the first thing we think of. Try to drink 8 glasses of water a day (approximately 3 litres). Without water, skin will look duller and wrinkles and ‘crepey’ skin more prominent due to dehydration. Adequate hydration levels will keep the skin plump and improve its elasticity, meaning we look fresher and younger!

2. Always protect your skin

It’s common knowledge that sun exposure causes major damage to the skin, yet the majority of people still only wear sunscreen when on holiday or sunbathing. Our skin needs protection all year round, no matter whether the sun is shining or not and 80% of all visible signs of ageing on the face, neck and chest area are caused by UV rays. They have the ability to break down elastin and collagen which, as mentioned above, helps to keep our skin looking plump and youthful. Wearing a high factor SPF, which contains protection against UVA and UVB filters, will help to prevent age spots, fine lines and wrinkles and, in turn, preserve healthy skin.

Remember, a sun tan isn’t an indication of health at all. It’s an indication of real skin damage. Get into the habit of applying sunscreen to your face, neck and décolletage every morning as part of your skincare regime, whether you are going outside or not and remember to re-apply if you do go out. 3. Add Retinol into your skincare regime

Retinols/Retinoids work deep into the skin to combat hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and boost cell growth. They help to plump fine lines and restore skin elasticity and promote collagen production. They can help repair sun damage, smooth the skin’s texture and even out the skin tone. With this said, retinoids are extremely potent and you should use either a gentle plant based bio-retinoid that is a safe and effective alternative to common retinoids. Or, if using a standard retinol, start with a small amount and build your way up to using more regularly. 4. Take a supplement

A great way to boost collagen production is by taking a high quality collagen supplement. Collagen supplements are primarily made with collagen peptides.
