Katie Piper

She’s brilliant and British

By Lauren Edwards

In order to list the accolades of Katie Piper I need to take a really deep breath…here goes… she is an author, broadcaster, activist, television presenter, campaigner, columnist, model, honorary doctor of health science, founder and trustee of The Katie Piper Foundation, ambassador for Pantene, Strictly Come Dancing contestant, fitness instructor, presenter on Songs of Praise, oh and a working mother to two children. To describe Ms Piper as inspirational would be like saying Alan Titchmarsh is quite good at gardening.

Apart from her ability to multi-task like no other, Katie’s ability to show immense courage as a result of an incredible trauma is what I admire her for the most. In March 2008, Katie Piper was the victim of a horrific acid attack, planned by an ex-boyfriend, which caused major damage to her face as well as blindness in one eye. Now 37, Katie has endured over 400 procedures to restore her face and sight. In 2009, Katie made the brave decision to document her experience in the Channel 4 documentary Katie: My Beautiful Face to help raise awareness for burn victims.

We all have parts of ourselves that we like more than others, whether it’s your hair, your great sense of humour or your long legs. I tried to look at what still I had and not what I had lost.

Katie credits the support she received from a burns psychologist at her local hospital who, with regular visits, helped her come to terms with her disfigurement. During her recovery, Katie kept two diaries; a photographic one and a written one. The photographic diary helped her remember where she had come from and how much progress she had made. The written one was where she recorded her thoughts, which helped her process her emotions and put things in perspective.

Perhaps one of Katie’s proudest achievements is The Katie Piper Foundation, which she founded in 2009, during the early stages of her recovery. Her charitable focus with the foundation is to create a specialist rehabilitation experience, in a space where adult survivors of burns can come and live and focus on their recovery.

The Katie Piper Foundation’s vision is to have a world where scars do not limit a person’s function, social inclusion or sense of well being.

A typical day sees Katie up bright and early at 5.00am so that she can have some alone time, before her husband and daughters wake up. After a coffee and her daily supplements of Cod Liver Oil, Zinc, Vitamins D and E, fitness is a key part of Katie’s day with daily weightlifting challenges online or a jog close to home. I have become an avid follower of Katie’s Instagram page @katiepiper_ and quite often pop along for a little nosy scroll through her outfit suggestions/home baking/crafting ideas or to read one of her inspiring quotes. You will not leave without a smile I promise you.

Life is short. Time is fast. No replay. No rewind. So enjoy every moment as it comes…
