Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone

Long story short:

Cat is forced to leave LA and return to Edinburgh when her twin sister, El, goes missing. When she returns to 36 Westeryk Road, she is on a secret treasure hunt to find out the truth.

If you loved Gone Girl or Rebecca, then this is the book for you!

If I’m perfectly honest, at the beginning I was a little bit apprehensive and reserved. There were elements of fantasy, and that’s not something I hugely enjoy. So it did take me a bit to get into it. But as the story progressed, I was absorbed, and I couldn’t put it down. (So stick with it!)

When I finished this book I was speechless; it’s been a long time since I’ve read a book as good as this. It is such a cleverly written book. The prose was beautiful. It’s such an atmospherically creepy read, which is very difficult for an author to do well.

There were many twists and turns. For each one, I was just shocked at how insanely brilliant this book is. I didn’t expect half of them. My brain was going overtime trying to place it all together!

It isn’t an easy read, you do need to be switched on and pay attention to the little details. But it is so worth it. It’s dark, complicated, smart and mind-numbingly amazing.

There’s so much I want to say about this, but I don’t want to give away anything. In case you haven’t guessed it, I really really really love this book!!

As a psychological gothic thriller, this was everything I wanted and more. I cannot believe that it’s a debut novel – Carole Johnstone is incredibly talented, and I really look forward to her future books.

This is definitely going to be one of my top reads of 2021. Are you going to enter Mirrorland? Because I think you’ll regret it if you don’t.
