The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary
Long story short:
Addie, her sister, and Rodney set off on a road trip to a friend’s wedding in the north of Scotland. Shortly after setting off, Addie’s ex crashes into the back of their car…
When I was sent this by @quercusbooks, I SCREAMED! Despite not being a romance fan, I am a huge @betholearyauthor fan. So, I was slightly nervous it wouldn’t live up to my expectations… however, move over The Flat Share, Amrit has a new favourite Leary novel!!
I literally don’t know how she does it, but I always get so invested in every single character (even Rodney). All five passengers had their own distinct personalities, and I loved each and every one of them.
How great would a ‘where are they now’ book be, comprised of all of the characters from Leary’s books?
In keeping with her style of writing, the story was written in alternating perspectives. But there was also the addition of ’then’ and ’now’ sections which was so effective. The plot was wacky, funny, and just a joy to read. It’s absolute chaos (but the good kind)!
This is definitely the most realistic of all three of Leary’s novels. Both Addie and Dylan are flawed individuals, and I loved the exploration of their insecurities and traumas. It was so genuine, and I think this is why it’s my favourite one so far.
In saying this, there are a few trigger warnings for depression, sexual assault and alcohol/drug abuse.
The ending left me with a lump in my throat – it was just such a wholesome and great finish! I devoured this book, and I’m not even sorry. I loved this book!
Basically… I cannot recommend this enough! It was one of my mostly anticipated releases of the year, and quite rightly so! I am eagerly awaiting the fourth book now…
N.B.: I was kindly gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
