Playing Nice by JP Delaney
Long story short:
Pete and Maddie have a 2-year old son called Theo. Miles and Lucy have a 2-year old son called David. Except, Theo and David were swapped at the hospital and having been living with the wrong parents…
This was Novel & Natter’s April read, and it was such a struggle to not read ahead… a huge test of self-control!
‘Playing Nice’ is the second JP Delaney book that I’ve read, and I loved it! (Definitely my favourite so far) Like ‘The Perfect Wife’, this had such a thought-provoking subject. If I didn’t want kids before, then I definitely do not want them now…
There were so many twists and turns, and so intricately written. Delaney does a great job of slowly drip feeding information which gives it such a compulsive and addictive feel. I loved the addition of court documents every couple of chapters because they would just throw me.
Each and every character brought out such strong emotions and feelings in me. Pete is definitely one of my most disliked characters – I know he’s meant to be a ‘good guy’, but he got on my last and every nerve! Miles? There’s a special place in hell reserved for him, but also 10/10 for being so thoroughly entertaining.
Also a moment of appreciation for the wonderful exploration of nature v nurture! It was dark and delightful.
Part of the ending was the absolute chef’s kiss (literally no other way I could describe it)! The other part I do wish was less ’neat’? I don’t want to give away anything so I’m going to leave it there!
I loved this book, and I can’t wait to read other J.P. Delaney novels. A massive thumbs up from me: read it, and let me know what you think!
