Is your skin happy?
This week I am focusing on compromised skin and what you can do to help it.
It’s very important to maintain a healthy skin barrier to avoid compromised skin. A healthy skin barrier will look hydrated, plump and blemish free with a healthy, even skin tone. Simply put, the job of our skin’s barrier is to keep the good stuff in (moisture) and the bad stuff out (bacteria, UV light and environmental damage such as dirt and pollution).
As we age, our skin barrier function naturally weakens. This is something we cannot change, but there are many things we can control and be mindful of, such as what we are putting into our bodies and onto our skin, to help protect and maintain our skin’s barrier.
Adopt a healthy diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds that are nutrient rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins. Avoid processed food, refined carbohydrates and foods high in fats and salts. Over time this can cause inflammation in the body and aggravate skin issues such as acne. Consume less sugary foods as these can cause a breakdown of collagen and elastin which are needed for keeping the skin plump, firm and looking youthful. A poor diet will always show up on the skin.
Along with eating well, always aim to drink 3 litres of water a day to ensure you stay hydrated and flush toxins from your body. As well as the many benefits in the body, drinking water balances the oil and water content on the skin of your face. This helps to prevent excess oils and sebum secretion which means fewer blemishes, clogged pores and acne and will give an all round clearer complexion. By staying hydrated, you will notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and your skin will feel plumper and firmer.
One of the many questions I get asked is how to get rid of Rosacea. Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels on the face and many different symptoms, including, but not limited to, burning skin, dry, scaly skin, acne like breakouts, thicker skin and more often than not, sensitive skin. Whilst Rosacea cannot be cured, it can be managed.
Some triggers of Rosacea include alcohol, heat, spicy foods, caffeine, exercise, hot drinks, emotional stress and smoking. Caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate the skin tissue and dilate the capillaries which can cause redness. Smoking dehydrates the skin and also slows down collagen production and cell metabolism.
It’s not always easy to avoid stress and we need to exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but avoid all other triggers as best you can.
As with all of my clients, I advise everyone to follow a daily skincare routine with products that protect, nurture and nourish the skin. I only use and recommend plant based products. Whilst on the subject of adopting a good skincare routine, avoid changing up your products. Avoid switching products and routine and instead find a skincare brand that works for you and targets your skins needs.
Put away the exfoliator! Daily exfoliating of the skin is not necessary and should be done in moderation. If your skin is feeling dry and dehydrated then you need to be adding Hyaluronic Acid to your routine to lock in any moisture on your skin and attract moisture from the atmosphere.
The same goes for using strong, potent chemicals on acne and blemished prone skin. These will not help in the slightest. Breakouts, irritation, inflammation, redness, excessive oiliness, tightness, dryness and itchiness is your skin barriers way of telling you it is not happy. When this happens, it needs nourishment and nurturing. Find a product that reduces the inflammation and at the same time adds moisture as it heals. I will always only recommend products that I know work and protect your skin and for this reason, Tropic’s Pure Lagoon blemish prevention serum is my recommendation. Don’t wait until your skin becomes compromised. If you adopt a good diet, drink plenty of water, have a good skincare routine in place that you can stick to and wear SPF daily, you are giving your skin a good chance of staying happy.
