I love Centreforce

and I’m not ashamed to admit it

As it’s our 21st issue we each picked an article we have enjoyed the most so far. This is mine, first published back in February. I hope you enjoy it as much as I still enjoy Centreforce 88.3DAB.

If you are justified and you’re ancient and you know that KLF are gonna rock ya, or that Nomad is devoted to you this could be a piece for you.

It occurred to me several years ago that all the songs my husband declares ‘belters’ hold no significance to me at all. After the Oasis years I went in one direction and he obviously another and I thought it was just him. Then we went to a friend’s 40th birthday party, a friend we have made together as adults, and the whole place was on his wave length and I was standing there trying to bop along and summon some enthusiasm. I was waiting, poised to release my inner dancer, the one that’s free and gets carried away with the joy particular songs bring, like everyone else already was. It didn’t happen.

A truly great DJ, just for a moment, can make a whole room fall in love. Because DJing is not about choosing a few tunes, it is about generating shared moods, it’s about understanding the feelings of a group of people and directing them to a better place. In the hands of a master, records create rituals of spiritual communion that can be the most powerful events in people’s lives.

Shortly after the party I chanced upon Centreforce (88.3 DAB) and I knew I had found my soul station, it was love at first listen. Every song was a choooooon and I was grinning, dancing about on my own in my kitchen. I called the dog to come and appreciate it with me. He did, I could tell.

Fast forward to Covid and home schooling. I’ve found it hard, no not the home schooling, the lack of Centreforce in my day. The children are online all the time and I can hardly play ‘banger after banger’ in the background, so I’ve had to put headphones on and try hard not to sing out loud (my friend once pulled her car over while I was singing as she thought it was a siren behind us). However, there’s a certain nostalgia to listening to this music with headphones on, I used to do the same when I had a mix tape and had got home from Camden Palace but wasn’t ready to call it a night yet as my ears were still ringing but I had to be quiet as my mum and dad were asleep. I’d be toe tapping in bed with my Sony Walkman on until I’d have to admit defeat and fall asleep, or turn the tape over!!

Friday night and Saturday morning my kids refer to the kitchen as Mum’s Rave, my husband smiles and shakes his head while I text messages into Centreforce and joyfully wait for them to be read out. Every close friend has had a Centreforce birthday shout out instead of a card, which I video on my phone, obviously I dress the speaker up, a bit of effort please, which I then WhatsApp to the recipient. It makes their day and mine.

birthday shout out – locked in locked on

So if you’re not already a listener but you know what a square toe Kicker is, if your dream car has ever been a Suzuki Vitara, or you know the origin of the saying, ‘it’s gone a bit Pete Tong’, I urge you to give it a go. You’ll be dancing about feeling like you’re twenty one again. But a word of warning, remember the kids are online and you could be broadcast across the virtual class room, and even though you don’t give a shit as you know you’ve still got moves, the kids will forever be known as ‘the kids with the raver mum’, actually ignore me, its got a nice ring to it.

Centreforce 88.3 for all the kitchen ravers misbehavers
