Here’s looking at you…

While our lovely Kelly is on holiday I have taken over the reigns of her column, just for a week (I hope). I’m not sure it was worth me mentioning that I’m not Kelly, it’ll be pretty evident that I’m not a beauty and skincare expert within the next paragraph. Buckle in!

Are you drinking enough H2O?

We should be drinking at least 6-8 glasses of fluid (not alcohol) a day and while it’s hot, that goes up to a cup every 20 minutes or so. Wow, that’s a lot right? But, is it really?

Your body uses water to sweat, urinate, and have bowel movements. Sweat regulates body temperature when you’re exercising or in warm temperatures. You need water to replenish the lost fluid from sweat. You also need enough water in your system to have a healthy stool and avoid constipation.

Yes, no one wants to be hot with a rock hard stomach, that sounds truly grim – she says, drinking a cup of tea and hoping it counts within the 20 minute quota.

Yay! Great news all – tea does count as part of my water/fluid intake. (Kettle goes back on).

The diuretic effect does not offset hydration according to my very scientific internet search. And does tea cool you down? No need to search for that answer, no it doesn’t, it makes me thermo-nuclear I can tell you, and it’s only when I get back down to the temperature I was in the first place that I believe I’m any cooler. Basically it cooks you then tricks you – [fact- source AION science department].

I was once told that if you feel thirsty it’s too late, that you are already partially dehydrated and your brain has only just cottoned on. I don’t know if that’s true on not, but I have lived by this, and by that I mean I moan like a brat if I haven’t got access to water. Just ask my husband who I drag around every holiday resort until I have found sparkling water that tastes a bit salty, he absolutely loves it, he does!

If you could only drink one drink for the rest of your life excluding all others what would it be?

For me it’s easy, a no brainer, fizzy water. I absolutely love it.

We all know we need to drink loads of water if its hot, and look out the window people, it’s roasting. So your Auntie AION isn’t going to bang on about you getting wrinkly and withered, you know that. What Auntie AION is going to say is, pour yourself a glass of water and enjoy the sunshine (from the shade, with a hat on, sun-screened to otter slipperiness, and relax.)

Oh and please don’t walk your dog in the middle of the day.

Symptoms of dehydration in adults and children include:

  • Feeling thirsty.
  • Dark yellow and strong-smelling wee.
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded.
  • Feeling tired.
  • A dry mouth, lips and eyes.
  • Weeing little, and fewer than four times a day.

Did you know that if you become dehydrated, not hospital drastic, but enough, it takes your body 36 hours to recover? Now, that is a fair while. Then if you continue to dehydrate the next day too, you’ll be running on minus and you can definitely expect some rabbit button poos, that is if you’re lucky enough to be able to do one at all! Think, bloated hard stomach and piles – it’s enough to get your head under a running tap isn’t it?!
