My Best Friend’s Secret by Emily Freud

Long story short:

Long story short: Kate is finally living a life that most people dream of. However, one evening she bumps into an old friend, Becky, and Kate’s past finally starts catching up with her.

Thoughts:

Thank you so much to @quercusbooks for sending me a copy of this – I absolutely loved it!

This is a very well-written and easy novel to read. Even though it is a descriptive book, I literally flew through it! I loved the style of writing: the prose is sublime.

The plot is multi-layered, making it an incredibly captivating thriller. I was kept on my toes throughout. I really enjoyed the contrast between the past and present – it kept me guessing!

Importantly, it’s a really authentic account of alcoholism and addiction. So, I would make sure you’re in a strong headspace if you are affected by either of these themes.

Nevertheless, it’s so refreshing to see the stereotype diminished. Kate is a strong protaganist: she’s a teacher who is trying to make something of her life.

It’s definitely more of a character driven novel than plot, so the characterisation is great! There were some really likeable individuals that you just want to root for. And some that you don’t!

I didn’t expect the ending at all! I was lulled into a false sense of security as I thought I had cracked the code… but nope! I was wrong.

Having said that, it was so satisfying and I really liked how everything was wrapped up well. There were no loose ends!

For me, this is an excellent debut novel and I look forward to Emily Freud’s next one! Definitely a must read of the summer.

N.B.: I was kindly gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
