This week AION shines a light on Jenny Eclair; comedian, author, grumpy old woman and chat show veteran.
Jenny Eclair’s trademark look of spiked white hair, glasses and cheeky mole is what makes her identifiable with the briefest of description, but it is her unmistakable wit that sets her apart from her peers in my eyes.
I watched the Grumpy Old Women series when I was too young to appreciate it -on the brink of peri but with no concept that I was soon going to be heading directly that way. At the time, I wasn’t rolling around the floor, splitting my sides like my Mum and her friends were, although I did find it funny, of course it was funny, it was Jenny Eclair!
However, my fangirl thing really started after I read one of her books. I was in a holiday villa and with nothing left to read, I borrowed a copy of Eclair’s Life, Death and Vanilla Slices. To this day it’s one of my very favourite books, if you haven’t read it you should do so immediately.
I have now read all of Jenny’s books (six novels) and each one is written with buckets of warmth and wit, they are literally unputdownable. Moving was another corker of a read. I really can’t recommend them enough!
Now this may be a Wikipedia lie (and I truly hope that it’s not) and if it is real this could well turn me into a stratospheric level fangirl:
She is said to have adopted the alternative surname Eclair (later her stage name) in her teens, when she was at a disco in Blackpool and pretended to be French.
I knew she was my kind of person, there’s enough quirk in Jenny Eclair to entertain me for a long stint in the Jungle. Jenny came third in I’m a Celeb 2010 after losing out to Stacey Solomon and Shaun Ryder.
Jenny appeared on Loose Women for a while but was sacked after just one year, she was peeved to say the least. Watch the clip below of her and fellow Loose Woman Kate Thornton talking about it, and then you’ll see why I love her so.

Eclair is a heavy user of Twitter and often makes me chuckle, recently she was frothing with rage over people calling a UK holiday a Staycation, like it was a bum deal, declaring that holidays in the UK are bloody brilliant. And I for one couldn’t agree more, and I also agree that anyone using the term Holi-bobs should definitely staycation in their own house permanently.
Jenny Eclair is not just funny, she’s a woman’s woman with plenty to say. She’s bright, articulate and impassioned about issues that are just morally wrong. She’s outspoken when it matters and isn’t afraid to make a right ruckus should it be needed.
Jenny Eclair – this week you are AIONs Top woman.
